ABOUT BULGARIA

Did you know?

Bulgaria is a country in Southeast Europe. Located west of the Black Sea and south of the Danube River, Bulgaria is bordered by Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north. It covers a territory of 110,994 square kilometers (42,855 sq mi) and is the 16th largest country in Europe. Sofia is the nation's capital and largest city; other major cities include Burgas, Plovdiv, and Varna.

One of the earliest societies in the lands of modern-day Bulgaria was the Neolithic Karanovo culture, which dates back to 6,500 BC. In the 6th to 3rd century BC, the region was a battleground for ancient Thracians, Persians, Celts, and Macedonians; stability came when the Roman Empire conquered the region in AD 45. After the Roman state splintered, tribal invasions in the region resumed. Around the 6th century, these territories were settled by the early Slavs. The Bulgars, led by Asparuh, attacked from the lands of Old Great Bulgaria and permanently invaded the Balkans in the late 7th century. They established the First Bulgarian Empire, victoriously recognized by treaty in 681 AD by the Byzantine Empire. It dominated most of the Balkans and significantly influenced Slavic cultures by developing the Cyrillic script. The First Bulgarian Empire lasted until the early 11th century when Byzantine emperor Basil II conquered and dismantled it. A successful Bulgarian revolt in 1185 established a Second Bulgarian Empire, which reached its apex under Ivan Asen II (1218–1241). After numerous exhausting wars and feudal strife, the empire disintegrated and in 1396 fell under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries.

The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 resulted in the formation of the third and current Bulgarian state. Many ethnic Bulgarians were left outside the new nation's borders, which stoked irredentist sentiments that led to several conflicts with its neighbors and alliances with Germany in both world wars. In 1946, Bulgaria came under the Soviet-led Eastern Bloc and became a socialist state. The ruling Communist Party gave up its monopoly on power after the revolutions of 1989 and allowed multiparty elections. Bulgaria then transitioned into a democracy and a market-based economy. Since adopting a democratic constitution in 1991, Bulgaria has been a unitary parliamentary republic composed of 28 provinces, with a high degree of political, administrative, and economic centralization.

Bulgaria has an upper-middle-income economy, ranking 68th on the Human Development Index. Its market economy is part of the European Single Market and is largely based on services, followed by industry—especially machine building and mining—and agriculture. The country faces a demographic crisis; its population peaked at 9 million in 1989 and has since decreased to 6.4 million as of 2023. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe. It is also a founding member of the OSCE and has taken a seat on the United Nations Security Council three times.

FAQs

HOW MUCH DOES A PHOTOGRAPHER COST IN BULGARIA?

The cost of hiring a photographer in Bulgaria can vary based on several factors, including the photographer's experience, the type of photography services required, the duration of the shoot, and the specific location within Bulgaria. Different photographers may have different pricing structures as well.

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the average hourly rate for a photographer in Bulgaria could range from 50 Bulgarian Lev (BGN) to 150 BGN or more. Wedding photographers, portrait photographers, and commercial photographers may have varying rates.

To get an accurate and up-to-date estimate, I recommend reaching out to photographers in your specific location within Bulgaria, specifying your photography needs, and requesting quotes. You can find photographers through online directories, social media platforms, or by asking for recommendations from locals or online communities. Keep in mind that prices may have changed since my last update, so it's crucial to get the most recent information directly from the photographers you are considering.

How MUCH THE PHOTOGRAPHERS LISTED ON YOUR LIST COST?

The cost of our wedding photographer can vary significantly based on factors such as their reputation, experience, geographic location, and the services included in their packages. In many cases, our wedding photographers may charge several thousand euros for their services. Prices can range from €2,500 to €7,000. Our high-end photographers often offer premium services, extensive coverage, custom albums, and additional perks. It's essential to discuss specific requirements, package details, and any additional costs during consultations with your favorite photographers.

Can tourists get married in BULGARIA?

Yes, tourists can get married in Bulgaria. However, there are specific legal requirements and procedures that must be followed. Here are some key points to consider.

WHAT KIND OF PAPERWORK DO WE NEED TO GET MARRIED IN BULGARIA?

  1. Residency Requirement: Bulgaria does not have a residency requirement for marriage, which means that tourists can get married there.

  2. Civil Ceremony: A civil ceremony is required for a legal marriage in Bulgaria. This ceremony typically takes place at the municipality (община/obshtina) where the couple intends to marry and is officiated by a registrar.

  3. Documentation: Tourists may need to provide certain documents, such as valid passports, birth certificates, and a certificate of marital status. These documents may need to be translated into Bulgarian and possibly authenticated.

  4. Legal Age: Both parties must be at least 18 years old to marry in Bulgaria.

  5. Notice of Marriage: Couples are usually required to give notice of their intention to marry in advance. This involves submitting the necessary documents to the municipal office.

  6. Witnesses: Witnesses are typically required during the civil ceremony, and their presence may be necessary to sign the marriage certificate.

  7. Religious Ceremonies: If the couple wishes to have a religious ceremony in addition to the civil ceremony, they should check with their chosen religious institution for any specific requirements.

It's essential to contact the municipal office in the specific municipality where you plan to marry to obtain accurate and up-to-date information about the requirements and procedures. Keep in mind that requirements may vary slightly between different municipalities in Bulgaria.

Starting the process well in advance of the planned wedding date is advisable to allow for any necessary paperwork and arrangements. Consulting with local authorities and, if needed, seeking assistance from a wedding planner or legal advisor can help ensure that you comply with all the necessary regulations.

What is a BULGARian wedding like?

Bulgarian weddings are rich in tradition and customs, blending both ancient rituals and modern influences. Here are some common features of a traditional Bulgarian wedding:

  1. Engagement Customs: Before the wedding, there is often an engagement ceremony called "Svatba," during which the families of the bride and groom exchange gifts. This event symbolizes the formal agreement and acceptance of the upcoming marriage.

  2. Pre-Wedding Rituals: On the day of the wedding, various pre-wedding rituals take place. These may include the "grabbing of the bride," where the groom and his groomsmen must negotiate and pay a symbolic ransom to the bridesmaids to "release" the bride.

  3. Dressing in Traditional Attire: The bride and groom often wear traditional Bulgarian attire. The bride may wear a white dress, and the groom may wear a suit or traditional folk costume. The attire can vary based on regional influences.

  4. Procession to the Wedding Venue: The wedding procession, known as the "svatbarska povorka," involves the groom's party going to the bride's home to escort her to the wedding venue. This procession may include lively music, dancing, and symbolic rituals.

  5. Civil and Religious Ceremonies: The wedding ceremony typically involves both a civil ceremony at the municipality and a religious ceremony in a church. The civil ceremony ensures legal recognition, while the religious ceremony is important for those following Orthodox Christian traditions.

  6. Blessing with Bread and Salt: After the civil ceremony, the newlyweds are traditionally greeted by the groom's mother with bread and salt. This symbolizes prosperity, health, and hospitality in the new family.

  7. Dancing and Celebrations: Bulgarian weddings are known for their lively and joyous celebrations. Traditional Bulgarian music, dances like the horo, and energetic folk tunes are an integral part of the festivities. Guests often join in the dancing, creating a festive atmosphere.

  8. Wedding Feast: A lavish wedding feast follows the ceremonies, featuring traditional Bulgarian cuisine. Popular dishes include banitsa (a pastry filled with cheese and eggs), kavarma (a meat and vegetable stew), and various desserts.

  9. Wedding Games and Traditions: Various games and traditions are incorporated into the wedding celebrations, such as the breaking of a loaf of bread over the bride's head for good luck and fertility.

  10. Gifts and Well-Wishing: Guests often bring gifts for the newlyweds, and it's common for the couple to receive well-wishing speeches and blessings throughout the celebration.

While these traditions are common, it's important to note that the specifics of a Bulgarian wedding can vary based on regional influences, family traditions, and personal preferences. Modern weddings in Bulgaria may also include elements inspired by global trends.

All Kind oF weddings and ELOPEMENTS

Weddings vary greatly across different cultures, traditions, and personal preferences. Here's a brief overview of various types of weddings:

  1. Traditional Weddings: These weddings typically follow cultural or religious customs and traditions specific to a particular community or region. Examples include Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, and Buddhist weddings, each with its own rituals and ceremonies.

  2. Civil Weddings: Also known as courthouse weddings, civil weddings are officiated by a government official, such as a judge, justice of the peace, or a civil marriage commissioner. They often involve a simple ceremony with legal vows and minimal formalities.

  3. Destination Weddings: Couples choose to have their weddings at a location away from their hometown, often in exotic or picturesque destinations. These weddings can range from intimate beach ceremonies to elaborate events at luxury resorts.

  4. Outdoor Weddings: Held in natural settings such as gardens, parks, vineyards, or beaches, outdoor weddings offer a scenic backdrop for the ceremony and reception. They often embrace nature and incorporate elements like floral decorations and outdoor activities.

  5. Themed Weddings: Couples personalize their weddings by choosing a specific theme that reflects their interests or hobbies. Themes can range from vintage, rustic, and bohemian to movie-inspired, fairytale, and cosplay weddings.

  6. Eco-Friendly Weddings: With a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, eco-friendly weddings minimize waste and carbon footprints by using recycled materials, opting for organic food and flowers, and choosing eco-conscious vendors.

  7. LGBTQ+ Weddings: Same-sex couples celebrate their love with weddings that may follow traditional or personalized ceremonies, depending on their preferences. LGBTQ+ weddings highlight inclusivity and equality in marriage.

  8. Micro Weddings: In intimate gatherings with a small guest list, micro weddings prioritize quality time with loved ones over the scale of the event. They often involve fewer than 50 guests and can be more budget-friendly and personalized.

  9. Multicultural Weddings: Couples from different cultural backgrounds blend their traditions and customs to create a unique wedding experience that honors both of their heritages. These weddings celebrate diversity and foster cultural exchange.

  10. Virtual Weddings: In response to circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic, couples may choose to host virtual weddings, where guests participate remotely via video conferencing platforms. Virtual weddings enable couples to share their special day with friends and family worldwide while prioritizing safety.

These are just a few examples of the diverse range of weddings celebrated worldwide, each reflecting the personalities, values, and preferences of the couples involved.
