ABOUT
SERBIA

Did you know?

Serbia is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Southeast and Central Europe,[ located in the Balkans and the Pannonian Plain. It shares land borders with Hungary to the north, Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, North Macedonia to the south, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, and Montenegro to the southwest. Serbia claims a border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Serbia has about 6.6 million inhabitants, excluding Kosovo. Its capital Belgrade is also the largest city.

Continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, the territory of modern-day Serbia faced Slavic migrations in the 6th century, establishing several regional states in the early Middle Ages at times recognised as tributaries to the Byzantine, Frankish and Hungarian kingdoms. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by the Holy See and Constantinople in 1217, reaching its territorial apex in 1346 as the Serbian Empire. By the mid-16th century, the Ottomans annexed the entirety of modern-day Serbia; their rule was at times interrupted by the Habsburg Empire, which began expanding towards Central Serbia from the end of the 17th century while maintaining a foothold in Vojvodina. In the early 19th century, the Serbian Revolution established the nation-state as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory.[10] In 1918, in the aftermath of World War I, the Kingdom of Serbia united with the former Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina; later in the same year it joined with other South Slavic nations in the foundation of Yugoslavia, which existed in various political formations until the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. During the breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbia formed a union with Montenegro, which was peacefully dissolved in 2006, restoring Serbia's independence as a sovereign state for the first time since 1918. In 2008, representatives of the Assembly of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, with mixed responses from the international community while Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory.

Serbia is an upper-middle income economy, ranked "very high" in the Human Development Index domain. It is a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic, member of the UN, CoE, OSCE, PfP, BSEC, CEFTA, and is acceding to the WTO. Since 2014, the country has been negotiating its EU accession, with the possibility of joining the European Union by 2030. Serbia formally adheres to the policy of military neutrality. The country provides universal health care and free primary and secondary education to its citizens.

What is a SERBIAN wedding like?

A Serbian wedding is a lively and joyous celebration filled with rich traditions, music, dancing, and heartfelt customs. Here's an overview of what a traditional Serbian wedding might entail:

  1. Pre-Wedding Rituals: Before the wedding day, there are often pre-wedding rituals and customs, including the "Buying of the Bride" where the groom and his family negotiate with the bride's family for her hand in marriage. This is followed by various ceremonies and festivities, such as the "bachelor" and "bachelorette" parties.

  2. Ceremonial Traditions: The wedding ceremony itself is typically held in a church, with religious rituals and blessings performed by an Orthodox priest. Ceremonial customs may include the crowning of the couple, exchanging of rings, and the lighting of candles to symbolize the union of the bride and groom.

  3. Traditional Attire: The bride often wears a white gown and a veil, while the groom may don a suit or traditional Serbian attire, such as a "odžaklija" (embroidered vest) and "čaksire" (pants). The bridal party and guests also dress in their finest attire, with women wearing colorful dresses and men wearing suits or traditional clothing.

  4. Music and Dancing: Music and dancing are integral parts of Serbian weddings, with lively folk music and traditional dances like the kolo being performed throughout the celebration. Live bands or orchestras may provide entertainment, keeping guests dancing late into the night.

  5. Feasting and Banquet: Serbian weddings are known for their abundant feasts and banquets, featuring a variety of traditional dishes such as "ćevapi" (grilled minced meat), "sarma" (cabbage rolls), "ajvar" (pepper-based condiment), and "rakija" (fruit brandy). Wine, beer, and other beverages flow freely, with guests enjoying the delicious food and festive atmosphere.

  6. Toast and Blessings: Throughout the reception, guests offer heartfelt toasts and blessings to the newlyweds, expressing their well wishes for a happy and prosperous marriage.

  7. Games and Traditions: Various games and customs may be incorporated into the wedding festivities, such as the breaking of bread for good luck or the "stealing of the bride" where the groom must pay a ransom to retrieve his bride.

Overall, a Serbian wedding is a joyous celebration of love, family, and tradition, bringing together loved ones to create lasting memories and celebrate the union of two individuals.

  3. Destination Weddings: Couples choose to have their weddings at a location away from their hometown, often in exotic or picturesque destinations. These weddings can range from intimate beach ceremonies to elaborate events at luxury resorts.

  4. Outdoor Weddings: Held in natural settings such as gardens, parks, vineyards, or beaches, outdoor weddings offer a scenic backdrop for the ceremony and reception. They often embrace nature and incorporate elements like floral decorations and outdoor activities.

  8. Micro Weddings: In intimate gatherings with a small guest list, micro weddings prioritize quality time with loved ones over the scale of the event. They often involve fewer than 50 guests and can be more budget-friendly and personalized.

  9. Multicultural Weddings: Couples from different cultural backgrounds blend their traditions and customs to create a unique wedding experience that honors both of their heritages. These weddings celebrate diversity and foster cultural exchange.

  10. Virtual Weddings: In response to circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic, couples may choose to host virtual weddings, where guests participate remotely via video conferencing platforms. Virtual weddings enable couples to share their special day with friends and family worldwide while prioritizing safety.

These are just a few examples of the diverse range of weddings celebrated worldwide, each reflecting the personalities, values, and preferences of the couples involved.
